HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT,
WELLINGTON, Dec. 16
The High Commissioner’s cable dated London 14th December, is as follows The mutton market is dull with less demand and trade is very disappointing, there being only from hand to mouth demand. The following Hire current quotations ; Canterbury, 3id ; North Island. 3Jd ; Australian, 2Jd ; River Bl&te 3d. The lamb market i* a shade weaker, owing to large arrivals from Australia. Canterbury lamb 5Jd pei H>; other than Canterbury. Sid. The beef market is steady. The demand has been chiefly f or forequarters. Quotations : hin-d-tiuartors. 3Jd per P> ; fore-quarters, 2|d. The butter market is very firm with a groat demand for the Christmas trade. It is estimated that supplies will l>c short. Choicest New Zealand butter 120s per cwt ; Australian 117s ; Argentine 117s ; Danish 1235; Siberian 109s ; saltless 2s less than tbe above prices. Damaged butter from the s-s. Turakinn, which caught fire shortly after, leaving New Zealand and put Lack to Wellington, is realising l 112 a per cwt. There is a better demand for eheese ; white manufacture 60s per cwt ; coloured 61s.
The hemp market is quiet and small busiHess is doing. Fcflowing are quotations : "Good-fair” grade on spot £29 ; "fair" grade on spot £2B ; "fair current Manila” on spot £29 10s. JainuanyYfarch shipments of ■■’good-fair” grade £2B ; "fair” grade £27 "fair currom Manila" £29.
SALE OF CLYDESDALES. A number of northern gentlemen visitors at our late show were so struck, with the. quality 51 the Clydesdale Colts that they remained behind and visited the farms of some of our well known breeders. Several sales were marie and the National Mortp gage and Agency Co. report the following : On account of Mr Robert Kennedy, Drummond : 1 two-year-old colt by "Tam O’ Shanter,” 1 two-yeaf-old colt by "Lord Roberts.’’
On account of Hr J. 0* Robertson. Thorntmry : 1 two-year-old filly % “Garthlaod." On account of Hr Wni. Marshall, Fairfax : 1 two-year-old edit by "Garthland, ’’ dam ‘‘Macarthur’’ mare! The prices paid indicate the great popularity cf these well known sires and afford g striking- instance of the progress Southland hBB made in the breeding of good horses. The same company report several sales pending which will probably be completed in the next day or two.
