The Parliament Fire

EXAMINATIONS TO BE: REPEATED. Per United Press Association. WEI,LING TON, Dec. 13. In consequence of the destruction by the lire at Parliamentary Buildings of the papers of the candidates -engaged in the matriculation and scholarships' examinations, it has boon decided to hold another examination on January 20th and 21st next. The Wellington candidates who sat for matriculation arc the only ones who will receive fresh papers, but the scholarship candidates all over the dominion will have to sit on the dates mentioned and go over their work again. A GROWL. DUNEDIN, Doc. 13, The information that candidates in matriculation and scholarship examinations will have to undergo further examination on January 20 and 21 has been received! locally with indignation. It is argued that there would be no insurmountable dilliculty at having the examinations before Christmas. The matter has been brought under the notice of the lion. Mr Millar and Mr Arnold, M.P.’s, who are interesting themselves with the object of having the examinations held before Christmas.

i PROPOSED CHANGE OF SITE. i GOVERNMENT HOUSE i SUGGESTED. DUNEDIN, Dec. 13. During a speech at a Harbour > Board excursion to-day tho Prime Minister made an important announcement in connection with the recent destruction of Parliamentary Buildings. He said that one of the trophies the Government had to face was the prpviding of proper housing for the present and future representatives of the people of the dominion. The matter was one that probably Parliament would have lo bo consulted about, on one material point at any rate. He thought it would bo well to make a change of site, subject tp the opinion of His Excellency, who had ever been most courteous and ready in meeting the wishes of the Government and the country. He, (Sir Joseph) believed that the Governor would be favourable in this matter to ap.y proposal made by the Prime Minister and his colleagues. Ho believed that the most careful consideration would result in the conclusion that they should avail themselves of the large area of land on which 1 Government House stands, It was an area more suited for Parliamentary Buildings than for Government House. It seemed to him that the time was opportune to build ' something that would bo for all time i a credit to the dominion and to its people.
