Southland Coursing Club

The first of a series-of meetings to be held through Southland for the purpose of enlisting • the. practical sympathies of sporting men was hold in the Southland Hotel, Gore, oh ( Tuesday evening. There wierje some 20 , gentlemen present. Mi - Owen Kjelly, , of Gore (vice-presiduat >, was voted j to the chair. In his opening remarks, Mr Kelly briefly pointed out that the Southland Coursing Club, which had just been brought into existunco by keen enthusiasts in Invercargill, was just what the numerous owners of dogs thought the province wanted, as the cost and loss of time required to send their dogs to Dunedin and Oamaru debarred the majority from entering. He predicted that success would attend the efforts of the promoters, and front inquiries, he could confidently predict that Gore would not bo behind in supporting the Club. He had great pleasure in introducing to those present Mr A. A. Paapo, the popular secretary of the Club, who hud come up for the. purpose of putting the whole position of affairs before them. He had entered upon his new duties with his characteristic enthusiasm, and the success of the Club was already practically ensured. Mr Paupe returned thunks for the complimentary references -;tu himself. and stated that the attendance was very gratifying. Ho dealt exhaustively with the scheme that had been drawn up by the committee, who meant business. Already some £i2o was in hand from members' subscriptions, and as each member of the committee had guaranteed to dispose of five tickets, £IOO was already in sight from Invercargill. Promising letters had been received from Vinton. Nightcaps, Oreti Plains and Queenstown in particular and lie was confident that before ninny weeks were over the sum of £l5O (being the estimate of, the amount required to make the Plumpton) would bo In hand. An opportunity was then given for those present to enroll. Eighteen took tickets at £1 each, and after the meeting live others were secured, while several books were issued to local enthusiasts. After various questions re representation, rules, etc., had been answered, the chairman moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Paapo for going to Gore and putting the facts so lucidly before them, and this was carried with acclamation. The secretary having replied, a vole of thanks to the chair and the press was carried, and the meeting terminated.
