AMENDMENT TO THE ADDRESS. Per United Press Association. By Electric Telegraph.— Copyright. LONDON, Fob. 14. Mr G. N. Barnes, Labour member for Blackfriars, moved an amendment regretting that no provision had been made for old ago pensions. The Hon. H. H. Asquith, Chancellor of the Exchequer, in a sympathetic reply, said he was anxious to make a beginning, but must proceed tentatively by stages. The question was how to find the money. The Government ardently desired to start a pension scheme on lines socially and financially sound. Mr John Bums, President) of tho Local Government Board, said tho matter would be taken tip when the moans and time allowed. Mr Austen Chamberlain estimated that seventy-eight millions would be required. The amendment was rejected .by 213 to 61. Mr Keir Hardie, Labour leader, has given notice of a suffragette amendment to the Address-in-Reply. Mr Augustine Birrell, the new Chief Secretary for Ireland, has given notice of a bill to establish an Irish Council.
EVICTED IRISH TENANTS. •MR BIRRELL PROMISES SETTLEMENT. A- WOMAN’S SUFFRAGE BILL. LONDON, Feb. 15. Received 15th, 11.43 p.m. Replying to an amendment by Mr J. P. Hayden. Nationalist member for Roscommon, regretting that Parliament's promises in regard to evicted tenants were unfulfilled, Mr Birrell admitted that the matter brooked no delay and undertook to apply the utmost pressure to the Estate Commissioners. He hoped that every claim would bo adjudicated in May. Referring! to Clanricard’s shocking case,, he hinted at legislation depriving him of the management of his estates, as he was wholly incompetent to manage them. hlr John Redmond, chairman of the Irish Parliamentary Party, stated that the reply was quite satisfactory. Ills amendment was withdrawn. Mr tV. H. Dickenson, St. Pancras, Introduced a Woman’s Suffrage Bill. It is reported that 400 Commoners Support the measure.
