Per United Press Association. AUCKLAND, Sept. 7, A Chinese seaman from the s.s. Aparirna pled guilty (o a charge of bringing opium ashore from the steamer and was fined £25 ;in default imprisonment up to six months. HAMILTON, Sept. 7. Isaac Watts, a middle aged man, was working near Ngatira in a cutting when a fall of oarl'i occurred, sending him down a shoot md burying him completely.- Son. Maoris helped to dig him out and his four mates carried him 4\ miles over a rough bridle track in 45 minutes to catch a train. Watts is in Waikato Hospital where it teas found that a leg was broken and that he was severely bruised on the back.
WELLINGTON, Sept. 7
To-day Ernest Berge, a dairyman was fined £3 for having failed to keep his dairy clean. The Newtown Licensing Committee told the licensee of the Park hotel that his license would not ho renewed at the annual mooting unless the house was conducted in a ‘better way. The police, report stated that too much drunkenness was seen about the promises. ASHBURTON. Sept. 7. To-day Mr Wray, S.M., convicted John Kilgour on three charges of .selling and one charge of exposing liquor for sale at Mount Somers and lined him £3O on one charge of selling, in default six weeks’ imprisonment. James Smith was fined •10s for bringing liquor into a noliconse district and a shopkeeper was fined 5s for selling a small boy a
pennyworth of lollies on a Sunday DUNEDIN, Sept. 7
Fire broke out this evening in a 6roomed house in High street, owned by Mr B. Greenwood and occupied by Mrs Rolls, wife of the captain of the Tarnwera, and spread to an adjoining 1 1-roomed house, owned by Mr George Fenwick and occupied by Mrs Monk, both being practically destroyed with their contents. Greenwood’s house is insured for £3OO in (ho National and Mrs Rolls furniture for £3OO in the New Zealand office. She estimates her loss at £250 above the insurance. Mr Fenwick had recently reduced the policy on his house to £SOO in the New Zealand office. Mrs Monk’s furniture is insured for £250 in the Manchester office and her son’s furniture for £IOO In the National.
