Bank Holidays.
To the Editor. | Sir, —is il not. about time that the Government were approached with reference to ,tho Introduction of a bill specifying what the geperol holidays throughout! the colony shall be in future 7 Only last week there wer,e lour working days on which the Banks were closed, and this week another Saint has sprung another holiday on the business community, while 4t Christmas and New Year there are from six to eight- .days on which ah Bonk business can *oe transacted, besi* os kt whole lot more Saints days, Arbot day, Birthdays, , etc., during the V2 months. Judging by their solntshipa one would think we were a Spanish Roman Catholic colony, and after a while when we have introduced a Saint Soddon day. and a Saint Word day. and a few others, the only working day for a Rank in three years will bo the February. It is without doubt the doty of the Chambers of Commerce all over the colony, to bring before the Cabinet the desirability of passing a: bill on |he basis of Sir John Lubbock's bill which has been in force in the Old Country about 30 years and in which the holidays are permanently fixed. 'they used to be . Christmas Buy, boxing Day, New Year's Bay. flood Friday, Easter Monday, and the first Monday in August. I am not quite sure whether Queen's Birthday and Prince of Males’ Birthday were also included. but believe that they were not. The hours cf working also were 9-30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 9 a.m. to 1 p-m. on Saturday.' One of the strongest objections to such long holidays as occurred this Easter is that business people are forced to leave considerable sums of money on their business premises, giving a fine opportunity to burglars to burgle at their ease. —I am, etc.. NEAXBEU.
