The Abattoirs.
To tlu* Editor. Sir. —Messrs Rain and -Martin art* to be congratulated for showing that they are not the usual Council ornaments, hut believe in finding out tUngs for themselves. As they have set the ball rolling may I lie allowed to offer the Council one or two suggestions before they hurriedly revoke bylaws and make appointments which may afterwards bo found to he unwise. Evidence of what is actually required should ho obtained from those who work at the Abattoirs, and who know by actual experience, and i would suggest that the Council ap point a committee to hear evidence, in camera if they like, when 1 will guarantee that they will hear things which will rather astonish them. Among other questions they might ask the following :—l. Who authorised the Council's property to be used* for planting oats, potatoes, etc? ; 3. Is it true that part of existing fences Were taken away to fence in some of these plots ; 3. Is it true that the men employed by the Connell did the gardening work, nud that the Inspector got the benefit of the crops ? I would also like to ask each individual Councillor whether he knows how much laud there is at the Abattoirs, and the boundaries thereof. A committee would find in answer to further questions. Unit while Mr C. W*. Wilson is generally lik,d anti is a capital man where in* is. that as manager be would not lie so successful. the Abattoirs needing n man in authority who can say “do this," and it is done- To appoint a person as manager who has previously been " hail fellow well met ” with the oilier employes would mean that obedience to orders could not be expected, f have omitted one question, viz. '— Is it true that n certain individual Inis had a horse and two cows running for a Irng time in the, Council's paddocks? To conclude. one word to the wise —When you want to find out anything thm.r advertise* yout' coming ami go forth with tall hats and cigars in a pair horse brake at the ratepayers' expense.—l am. etc.. n\E BEHIND THE SCENES.
