Rowing Notes

(By " Grip.’-) Just why it should be so is difficult oi explanation, but that at times that tired feeling " overcomes clubs as well as individuals is an incontrovertible fact. For exemplification of this contention one only requinea to glance over the entries in the various rowing races contained in tho programmes of Riverton and lUu.l Regattas. There it will be found that Awarua Club is unrepresented, and the Railway Rowing Club's only indication ot life comes from a solitary entry in. the maiden class. Wake up !

I understand that the secretary oi the Invercargill Regatta Committee has written to the Bluff Regatta Committee suggesting the advisnblcness of permitting the races for senior fours and maiden fours at Invercargill to count as 190G wins on the trophies presented for serial competition at Bluff Regatta ; also asking for a donation towards the Invercargill Regatta funds. As the Bluff Regatta was absolutely abandoned so far as rowing and yacht racing, was concerned, the request seems almost certain to bo complied with, though I have not hoard that such is the case up to the present. Invercargill 190G regatta promises to draw together formidable entries in nl classes of rowing and sailing. The clubs which are certain to send representatives from Otago are : Bort Chalmers, Otago H.C„ Queen’s Drive, and Dunedin Amateurs. Each club will have entries for several events, and our local clubs will require all the training they can get if they are to retain a share oi the honours. It is just possible that. I lie Dunedin Vacht Club will bo represented in tho sailing races, Invercargill Rowing Club, in order to comfontubly accommodate their increasing membership, found it necessary to considerably enlarge their shed at the beginning of the season, and propose holding a grand lloral fete on tho 14th, 15th and IGth February to assist in liquidating their expenditure in that direction- Tho boathouse is now quite an imposing edi lice, and the plant housed is very largo and one of the best in the colony. Particulars of all competitions in connection with the Fete are now in circulation. A general meeting of the Club will be held probably on Tuesday evening, when members will be allotted their duties.

At tho I.R.C. shed crews competing in the President's Fours have unfortunately been prevented from training in the boats on account of the bad weather of late. The first races of the series commence on Saturday, when W. Johnston’s crew meets D. Macdonald’s ; K. Cameron’s meets Ellis’s, and Callender's meets Moekridgo's. The silver cup presented by Mr E. G. Cmlrill to the Southland Rowing Associ ation is a remarkably handsome one, standing 20in. in height and massively proportioned. It is for the Junior Fours race at Invercargill Regatta. and the Club gaining tho greatest number of wins in six years becomes tho possessor. The provisional programme of th N.ZiA. Championship Regatta is to hand, and will take place at Plcton on Easter Monday, 16th April. Excepting r.he Junior Pairs, Maiden land Youths’ Fours, all races are in best boats. Tho Champion Fours carries a first prize of £SO (and four gold medals) ; 2nd, £ls. ClnTmpion .fairs, £ls and £3 ; Champion Double Sculls, £ls and £3 ; Champion Single Sculls. £lO and £2 : Ladies’ Plate (open to all crews not competing in tho Champion Pours), £ls and £3 ; Junior Fours, £l2 and £2 ; Maiden Fours, £lO and £2} Youths’ Fours, £lO and £2,; /Junior Pairs, £7 and £2, How many crews Southland will be able to send is not yet certain, but T.U.C. seniors should make an effort to compete, and tho juniors also. Riverton R.C. would \M> wise in considering the advantages to be gained by championship competition. There is only one point in the championship programme the wisdom of which teems questionable : that Is tho stipulation in the Ladies’ Plate debarring all crews which compete in tho Champion Fours. Tho usual procedure has been to debar tho champion crew only from competing, and this has been generally satisfactory^ Railway Rowing Club bos been giving signs of renewed vigour lately, several crows being in active training. Tho starting times of all races at Invercargill Regatta will be published on Tuesday morning. Following are this I.R.C. crows selected to represent tho Club at Invercargill Regatta ; Senior Four : Basstian, Brown, Lang, and J ohnston ; Junior Fours ’ (a) G ilmour, Macdonald, Ellis, Butler ; ib) D. Campbell, Cameron, Mockridge, A. Traill ; Maiden Fours : Ritchie, Steele, Mulvcy, dll; Youths' Fours : Callender, Hay, Stocker ; Senior Pair * T. Brown, O. Lang : Senior Double Sculls ’ Basstian, Johnston ; Junior Pair ’ Qilonour, Macdonald ; Malden Pair : Ritchie, Steele { Malden Double Sculls ; T. Bnbwn. G., Lang, C
