DAMAGE IN CANTERBURY. Per United Press Association. ASHBURTON, Jan. 23. (Shortly after one o'clock this morning a severe thunderstorm, ac- ; companied by hail, passed over this district in a narrow track from the hills to the sea. In its course (ho storm was very destructive to mot, cereal, and fruat crops, flowers and vegetables being ruined by hailstones, which were up to inch in length and three-quarters of an inch j thick. Several business premises had goods damaged through gutters not| being able to carry off the water, and several windows were broken, also glass- verandahs and conserva-! tones. The weather to-day is cold and wet.
