AUCKLAND, Oct. 6

Fifteen young men were charged to-day with having played " Two up.” For the defence it was submitted that there was no proof of wagering or gaming. The prosecution only assumed that there was betting or wagering taking place on the throwing up of pennies. Another point was that it must be a game’ of chance and there was no proof that it was. It was only an assumption on the part of the police. Another point was that the place on which the men were was not a public place. The gate was locked and people broke, the fence and thus got into the section. It was essential to prove that the men actually took part in the game and were not just spectators. The Magistrate reserved his decision. The Grocers’ Associated Assistants have telegraphed to the Premier : —' “Shop assistants earnestly ask your support for Shops and Offices Bill as a just amendment, especially the clauses relating to six and nine o’clock closing.” WELLINGTON, Oct. 6. The Government has decided to summon a general conference of N.Z. employers and employes to discuss questions of interest relating to trade conditions. Invitations were sent out to-day to all the Trades and Labour Councils in cities, to all Employers’ Federations and to Farmers’ Unions, to send two delegates each to attend the conference, which will meet in about ten days. The travelling expenses of the delegates will be borne by the Government. District Judge Kettle, Mr Poynton (Public Trustee), and Mr H. S. Wardell, who were appointed to enquire into the action of the four Christchurch Post Office officials re the voucher incident, held a preliminary meeting to-day. The enquiry will open in Christchurch next Tuesday.
