Land Commission
Per United Press Association,
AUCKLAND, May 7,
Evidence was taken by the Coinmission at Mauugaturoto on Friday. R„ C. Smith, settler and county councillor, advocated that all Crown lands should be thrown open under the optional tenure. He believed in the freehold and thought that the Bickerstaffc estate was goin goi! so slowly because it_was offered only under lease in perpetuity- "■ ... , Charles E. Fisher, tenant on biCKerstaffe, said ho would like the l ight to acquire the freehold at the original valuation. He thought the reason why tho whole of Bickerstauo had not been taken up was mainly because the land was not offered under the optional system. Similar evidence was given by eight other tenants on Bickerstaffc. William Bailey, secretary -to the Maungaturoto butter factory, said that owing to the sale of freehold land in the district prior to tho opening of the Bickerstaffc the demand for the land had been to a great extent satisfied, and that accounted for Bickerstaffc sections not being taken up.
