A Gun Club’s Ditty
(To the " Captain.”) Now the '.big day's close before us, When the Gore boys moan to bore us, As they cleanly clip each swiftly whirrung bird ; Yet, when Kapuka gets a-going, • And Kapuka form is showing, And the ringing of the ballistite is heard— Then the crack shots from Mataura, They will marvel at the shower o' Feathers, as they' leave the pigeon’s breast ; And ” you know I would be happy To save ' a five,’ Old Cfiappio, For Kapuka’s boys can battle with the best. But we need the ’’ Champion,” too. With his -eyes of keenest blue, Aiming murder down the barrels of his gun. So, dear Captain, please to tell him, That we’ll bile him down and sell him, If he does not bring " the iron just for fun? And perhaps I am “ a ski-ter,” But remember that the writer Feels the raittle of the rhyming in his veins ; It may chance as I g'et older, I will settle down and hold ’er, But just the now wild fancy guides the reins.D.
