SUMMARY FOR APRIL.

The weather during April was very wet ahri cold: showing an early winter. The rainfall totalled 4.905 inches, fulling on 23 days out of 30, the heaviest fall being .800 ind'u on the 15th. Although the rainfall was much heavier than that of April last, year, the sunshine was also more generous, totalling 125 -hours, the longest period being 7 hours 40 minutes on tWe 18th. Although the "last 10 days were very cold and raw, the mean temporature for the month, taken, at 6 p.m,, was very fair, considering the season of the year, being 51 deg. F. The returns to hand from the Meteorologic al Department show that, the' rainfall for the colony was very unevenly distributed, as the table bolow shows. Invercargill, however, again' occupies a very creditable position, being fourth on the list of the chief towns. Taking the chief stations of tho two islands, the North has an average of 2.78 inches, heating the South, with 3-27 inches ; the -former being saved by such dry places as Rotorua, while the South is given away by the West Coast. The lowest total was tlhat at Pakaraka, Auckland. - with .31 inch, closely followed by Otekaike, Oamaru, with .42 inch. Pakawau, near Cape Farewell, again re-gis-tered tho highest rainfall, viz., 13 wet days and a total of 9.205) Inches, the heaviest fall for 24 hours being 2.705 ‘inches.
