WELLINGTON, May 2
The result of experiments with nitrogen bacilli at Levin-State [arm has been very successful. Three plots each were sown of beans, pens, clover and vetches. In one of each the seed w’as inoculated, tn tho second the soil was inoculated, and in the third neither seed nor soil was treated. In each'case the plot where the seed was inoculated showed a greater accumulation of nitrogen nodules than that in whi?h me soil w’as inoculated, and tho_ laltfr inturn showed a greater a>;m.mj'.Alioni than the untreated plots. In's n;l--ture is only useful for icyu-nteous crops. The nitrogen stored in the nodules of the roots is rsi.aired by the soil when the crop is cut an.i is available for the succeeding crop, which has not.the power of elaborating Hie cultures for itself. DiMoore, of Washington, U.S.A, bom whom the Government Biologist received the cultures, has i>i’,>m:S‘J a further supply, so that considerablequantities may be niaauf.i-5t.-i.-ed for distribution to farmers.
