I It is with regret that we Lave to reI port the death of Mr Thos. Gr wy fcjhand, headmaster of the Limehills school. H*> bad been in indifferent health •. f late, but nothing serious wa9 anticipated. About midday yesterday, however, he took a serious turn and the end eamo unexpectedly, the immediate cause of death beinc heart disease. Mr Shand was a native of Aberdeenshire, and came to Now Zealand with his parents, in tho ship Maori, away back in 1*52. His father, the late Geo. Shand, immerilatei . engaged in farming pursuits in the Taieri, and at one time owned ctaisiderable landed property in that district, being also largely interested in sawmilling. The deceased came to Southland abtut 25 vears ago and managed the late Mr John Shand's sawimill at Centre Bush for about ten years. Since that time he I has filled the position of schoolmanter at Forest Hill, Fernhills, and Limehills. Although well on In life when he took up the profession, the education he ' received at Nelson College ably fitted him for the work. Mr Shand's wifo, who predeceased him iby five yeara, was a daughter of the late Dr McShahe, of Nelson^ and a family ■of four sons and two daughters is left to. mourn this latest' loss. In his early days Mr Shand took a keen nterest in volunteering, holding the position of captain in the East Taieri llifles, and latterly he was largely instrumental in organising ihe Winton Rifles, in which he was a lieutenant. Through the 'death of Mr Shand the district has sustained a loss which Mill be felt by the whole community. In the soaial life of his locality Mr Shand took an active part, and his renial qualities endeared him to everyone. - The funeral will he held to-morrow.
