Neill, boiit dinghousekeeper at Port Chalmers, was charged Ayith keeping liquor for sale in a ho-Hceriso district. The premises, formerly the Provincial hotel, ■were visited by the police on 19th November, when a considerable quantity of ■ beer , spirits, otc . , were found. Mr Hanlon, for^the d< fence, raised tfie point that prohibition had not been duly determined in tho. district. An appeal was now before the Prhv Council,, and if ju conviction waa recorded 1 he wanted to 1 he in a position to move to have it quashed if the appeal case i went in the direction he thought it would. Tie wouldshow that, except the" beer, all the liquor had -been in the house" for a considerable tim e, some of it l.tfore Neill went into tho house. The police had failed to find any eyi-3 once *of a i9ale, : and when the raid' was made had to wait until Neill retui ned from IXmedin, where. he went 'daily on busirieels, to get keys to'gfil. into" the bar. Mr Graham, S-M.,' said the evidence of defendant 'was not satisfactory, as he gave it in a hesitating, prevaricating! manner. He would inflict a fine of. £5, costs £2 19s.
