BATTERIES WIPED OUT TO SAVE KOUROPATKIN. -■While Kouropatkhr's main force is hurrying to Tieling, to the north' of Mukden, the first and seventeenth corps, under -General Meyendorff and Bilderling. are engaging Kuroki's army south of Mukden. St. Petersburg, correspondents of French newspapers state that Cosacks on Wednesday night cut up a strong 'detatchment of Japanese •seven miles from Mukden. The conditions for retreating aro improving as, owing to the inability of the Japanece to securo favourable artillery positions the pursuit, is less vigorous. The Japanese turning movement just failed owing to entire Russian batteries suffering annihilation to prevent the cutting of Kouropatkin's communications*. An American eye-witness of tlio Russian stempede from Liaoyang testifies to the heroism of the Sisters of Mercy while removing the wounded from the hospitals tinder shell fire. One sister was killed and seven wounded while dressing wounds in the streets. The soldiers are completely exhausted and sleep in tho firing line.
