BATTERIES WIPED OUT TO SAVE KOUROPATKIN. -■While Kouropatkhr's main force is hurrying to Tieling, to the north' of Mukden, the first and seventeenth corps, under -General Meyendorff and Bilderling. are engaging Kuroki's army south of Mukden. St. Petersburg, correspondents of French newspapers state that Cosacks on Wednesday night cut up a strong 'detatchment of Japanese •seven miles from Mukden. The conditions for retreating aro improving as, owing to the inability of the Japanece to securo favourable artillery positions the pursuit, is less vigorous.
