Hussell) pleaded not guilty to a charge of illegally i>urchusing liquor, he being a ]>roliil)Ho<l Person. Counsel admitted that liquor hutl been purchased, and that defendant was a prohibited person, but contended I hut defendant had done no more than he nan •i riffht to do. The order was limited to Wakatipu and Wallace, and the liquor was purchased in lnvercargill. It had been held that in a cuse of this sort, the purchaser would not bo proceeded ugainst. The Magistrate agreed thut. the Act nas limited to the district in which the order was in force, and dismissed the TItUANCY. James McLeod was charged with tailing to send his child to school reguli 1 i> . He admitted Unit the boy had not been going to school, but said that he had sent a dot-tor's certificate to the headmaster. The Truant. Officer said thut the boy had bc-een absent for the year. The certificate was tfi\en in I'ebruary. and the boy had been running about pluying and fishing —His Worship said that, defenduiu would have to get a new exemption certiticaU-, and imposed a 11lR 1 of . r >s, costs 7s. — George McJ)ermott and John Hughes were similarly dealt with. Violet L-Mliott. a young woman, resident at Wtiimaliaka, was charged with travelling on a train without a ticket. She pleaded that she had taken v single ticket under the impression that it was a return. After hearing evidence, she was convicted, and fined ss. costs 13s 10d. _______—«—
