The Middle School
BREAKING UP CKRKMONY. There was a fair ajjendance ol parents «nd friend^ and a fTrgo muster of pupHi of the Middle Schoo m the p a>ffround quadrangle yesterday U> celevercarinll). J. A. Hanan, M.H.R.. I • W. had been very successful as far as school work was concerned. 1 hough they had had a considerable number of changes in tho staCf, he had no hesitation in saying that tho school was nc^er better staCed, nor haa tfto teachers worked more harmoniously together for the advancement of pupils, than at .the present time. The prevalence of J-aiio.", epidemics had greatly handicapped them but the lioard Inspectors, who conducted a stiff examination, had classed the school very well indeed. Addressing the pupils Mr Stirling gave soino good ticlVico to those Who wero not returning to school, and advised the others to h^v pegging away till they attained tho highest positions in their standards. Short appropriate addresses won. delivered by Messrs Froggatt, Ilanan ana Raymond, and tho Headmaster read a report of the school work. Mr }lehau>y said that owing to epidemics of scarletina coughs, and mumps tho schoul had never shown its nominal average attendance till the last quarter. ihe attendance showed a slight decrease on tho previous year, the departures of tho older pupils not being balanced by admissions into the infant room. inu^facilities given for attending the High Schools took away many who would otherwise have remained for the Seventh Standard, but this might be remedied b> the new syllabus, wbicn contained several subjects proficiency in which was- a condition of cadetship in the Civil fai>rvice. fete thanked the members ol the committee tor their ellorta on behalf ol the school and the members of the stall for the earnest and painstaking wort done under unusual disadvantages. M.t Field proposed a vote of thanks to the headmaater and start", and to tint gentlemen who had spoken. This was carried with three cheers, and the classy were hied away to their rooms, where the prizes were presented. Tho following is the prize list : — " PKIZE LIST.
