On clause 1, Councillor Roche niovod the addition of the words " on the same conditions as tho previous poundkeeper. Agreed to.— Councillor Stead asked why the house was given to the pound-keeper, one of the sanitary staff, instead of to one of to one of tho reserves men ?— The Mayor said that the house was offered to the gardener and his first assistant but both preferred not to go into it ; Trillo then accepted it.— On clause 5, Councillor Stirling moved an amendment adding the words " that other owners be notified that their weight .ridges are correct." He thought this was necessary in view of tho fact that some oi the public had not been satisfied about the correctness of the bridges.—Councillor Stead said the Council had nothing to do with the weighbridges unless thenattention was drawn to them by the police —Councillor McGmer seconded the amendment, which was agreed to.— Councillor Smith tnioved that the clause be deleted, and Councillor Ott seconded. —Councillors McDonald, Cleave and Roche supported tne clause, as a reply to the statement that one of the bridges was incorrect.— The clause as amended was agreed to.— On clause & Councillor Roche said that the committee had done their duty, as fur as they could go, and it was now for the Council to fay whether they were prepared to go further.—Councillor Cleave said that the question was whether the Council was prepared to buy a depot.— Councillor W. Stead that both were suitable.— Councillor .J . Stead moved that the clause be adopted and referred to the Finance Committee. — Councillor Mcllruer seconded. He thought the proposal was a little premature, as the present lease had 2J years to run, and ho would like to see the finances more, shipshape before they undertook a liability to purchase a property. — Councillor McDonald referred to the recent criticisms on the state of the depot. Ho considered that one of the offers was a #ood one. and that the present depot was unsatisfactory. He gave notice to move to test the feel ing of the Council, that the Council take into consideration the question of leasing Mr Stone's land, with a purchasing clause. He thought there should be some linality to the matter. — The motion was ruled out of order, as Councillor McDonald bad spoken to it. — Councillor Smith suggested that a report be received from the inspector and engineer. — Councillor Lillicrap said it was just possible that some better way to dispose of nightsoil might be adopted in a year or two.— Councillor Roche said that Councillor McGruer had previously described the •present depot as " abominable" ; it was astonishing how some councillors changed their minds. Councillor Lillicrap seemed afraid that the town would " bust " in purchasing a depot. The town would not be able to invent in a plant to dispose of nightsoil for many years. The question of a new depot would have to be faced, as conditions at the present one had not improved. It might as well be killed at once as referred to the Finance Committee. — Councillor J. Stead explained that his idea was to get a definite decision from tho Finance Committee. — Amendment car ried, and report as amended adopted. GAS AND WATER.
