Mills moved the second reading of the Timber Export Duty Bill, which increases the duty on the export of loirs, thus ensuring that work in connection with sawing the logs shall be dona in the colony. The second reading was agreed to. HATING ON UNIMI'HOVKU VALUE. The Hon. (.V Mills moved itho second reurlinjr of tjie Muting on liniinproved Value Act Amendment Bill, his alleged explanation being greeted with scornful laughter. , * EVENING "SITTING". Sir W. Uusstfll said the system of rating on unimproved value had not Riven satisfaction in the country. The, object of the bill appeared to bo to exempt mining properly from the various taxes. —The Minister said the bill simply made some technical amendments in the present law.— .Second reading agreed to. VALUATION OF LAND. Hon. C. Mills moved the second rend' inir of the Government {Valuation of Lund Act Amendment Hill. Jt provides for a revision of valuation rolls and the valuation of estates of deceased persons. —Mr Mussry said that under the bill rolls co-Hil" be revised every month or/ I every your. instead of two yearly as at present The Treasury was bare und this was another taxation squeezing bill.— Second reading agreed to. i;HE KKI-'KRENDUiL The Hefere'ndum Hill was considered in conunittoe — , An amendment, moved by Mr Ell. to give the initiative of the referendum to the people on the petition, of 25,000 electors was lost by 31 to U4. An amendment was passed providing that money bills imposing . burdens on the people may jjot bo submitted.— The bill was then reportefl from committee and the House rose at 1.25 a.m.
