Invercargill Cycling Club
« The annual meeting of the Club took place in the Club 'itooms last night, over 80 members being present, a fourth oi whom were ladies. The President 'Mr A E. Smith) occupied the chair. Tho report stated inter alia, that the committee had to express satisfaction a t the position of the Club. Although rot so sound financially as could be wished, yet the starting of the rooms -and the large expense necessarily entailed hail been a heavy handicap, but will) the increased membership, the increasing popularity of the rooms, asid the carnival to be held during the current season, they feel confident that the next balance would show a large credit. There is a deb-it balance of £'36 8s Cd on tho rooms accounts but tho receipts. £11 a 8g 2d, must be regarded as eminently satisfactory. The roll of financial members by last report was 103. During the season 123 members had been elected and 16 lor the present year, so that the Club starts tho year with a membership of 242. The increase in subscriptions over last year amounts to £23 14s 'Jd. The Physical Culture Club joined as a body during the season, and from this quarter has come some of the most energetic members. This new departure necessitated' the taking of the 'whole of the flat at present occupied, nnd in the patronage accorded to this department the Club has 'been amply rewarded for their venture., Progressive euchre parties are being held regularly, and the energetic secretary. Mr M. Hawkins, said the social committee aro to be commended for tho energy displayed. This year's surplus is' not included in the balance as the gatherings have not as yet been completed These parties are of great benefit to tho Club in establishing friendly relations among the members and in inducing many to join- Billiard and card tournaments have been herd, und have created considerable interest . In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the Chainman said that although the financial aspect might havo been better, the interest shown by members was most satisfactory. He did not think that any cycling club in tno colony had such a large roll, and ho felt confident that the ensuing season would show a marked improvement on that just closed. It had been mooted that the subscription fee should be increased, but he did not think there was any occasion for that step. The projected carnival would no doubt be the means of placing the CVub in a good financial position, but ho would impress upon niembers the necessity of bearing their share of the work to bring about this result. Jlr A. F. Hawke seconded tho motion, and said there was nothing to be alarmed at in connection with the balancesheet. The cost of the rooms showed v debit of £34, but indications pointed to a much larger membership this season, and ho was hopeful, now that thw Club had obtained tho whole flat of the building, to effect a saving in rental of £20 per year. To wipe oil tho Club's deficit of£fi7, he hoped all Concerned would give their assistance at tho forthcoming carnival, and, apart from revenue from this source, he would also like to see a largo increase in Club subscriptions. — Tho report and balance-sheet were adopted.
