He thought that. the work would be finished shortly, — Councillor Roche said that a reason for the clause was that it was well known that the men were not at work till 8.30 am and knocked off at 4.45 p.m. A contractor would do twice as much work a day, and the foreman knew it.—Councillor Cleave supported the clause-; He objected to the scatterinb of the staff, who were not properly under control. Tho contract system would result io a saving: to the Council. — The amendment was carried, and the report as amended adopted. G-AS AND WATER. Wilson on the matter of oxide of iron for gas purification ; f 4) that the waterworks and public works departments be instructed to report to the gas manager Jany suspected leaks in mains or servjee pipes; (5) that a copy of the sanitary inspector's report re .waste, of water be 'sent to" the waterworks engineer for consideration and report.
