Champion ploughing Match.

Delightful weather prevailed yesterday for the annual gathering •of the Southland Champion Ploughing Match Association on Mr Colin Gray's farm; Wallacetown Plains, where tho trials were held. Atr Gray had placed an excellent paddock at the disposal of tho.cohiinittee, and no complaint could possibly be made against either the ground Or the district. The entries thigiyear show a falling-of! as compared with last year, there being only 22, but there have been years in which the competitors were less numerous. The. decrease was principally in the champion 'double-furrow' class, 32 ploughmen competing,^ as against ,17 last August:" TEe other classes Were practically the;.same; as before,- the entries ' djsdpgoihtiagly.;; small. Considerable;"interest was shown, in the various -niafehes Tiy every fierabn 6f k large -attendance, and so even did ttie quality of the ulouglnne appear that very few ' ve o*?re<l; to: place the men. The judges -4»lessrs It. Younger. (Groper's Bush), J. ■ s (Rakahouka) and F. Clark (Heddon Bush) got to worki shortly afJS 1 ?. -30 p.m., and had their decisions in the hands .of. the secretary at 5 p.m The champion for 1903-04 is W. T. James, •of Aparima, whose work was highly commended by the judges. Last year's champion, W. Gray, come third, his team -breaking up j-ather badly, while yet ano.ther ex-champion was second. In the junior , classes the work, was of very uniform ...quality,- and it - Would/ he Mr<l . to remark, on it . in . detail. The mono--1 tony of waiting for the judges' decisions was broken as . usual "by -Eorser jumping competitions.: The Birch wood Hunt Club had made its rendezvous in the, ground, and a., number of the riders finished, oft , the day's sport by-.'. joining :in ; th© com* petitions. Messrs.: Gait .=and r iHa,wl£e had charge of this department, -ancLdischarg-, ed tneir duties to tb,e satisfaction of allconcerned. The 'general ; arrangemehts lor. tho day were good, and- the manner in. which they were carried put reflected every credit on the worthy- and .enthusiastic- secretary,. Mr ,Jv_ A. Mitchell, to : whose energy anil popularity 'the Association owes - what success it has attain-" cd. The .President-, Mr W. Young, also ; deserves .montion as .performing a useful share of the work. The results were de-1 clared by Mr .Mitchell shortly after 5 . o'clorfv tho crowd '- converging "towards: Messrs D. Kingsland and Soll9' lunclieon tent. Mr Mitchell first called for three, cheers for the judges, which were given, and, at the request of a .bystander,, >..a similar couiplimeht was paid to the secretary. The prize list was then read, each winner "receiving a. more or less favourable round of applause from the' spectators.
