Barnardo "Boys" in New Zealand
Tho Christchurch Press's London correspondent was recently a fellow passenger in the same compartment of a railway carriage with a, dapper little man, very well " groomed " and trimly dressed. His face was clean-shaven, save for a small, care-fnlly-waxed and smartly-curled mousta, che. He got into conversation with the famous philanthropist, whom he found a very pleasant man, but slightly deaf. I wanted to learn if he had found New Zealand a favourable field for his boys, of whom 1 knew he had sent some thither.
"A favourable field? Yes, indeed," Dr Barnardo replied ;, " 1 have sent out no fewer than 1100 of my boys to New Zealand, and they all have done well— are doing well." "That is a large number '."
" Yes, but then I have 11,000 getting on well in Canada. In New Zealand, however, my boys have got on particularly well. They all have been successful and are prospering. Somu have attained very good positions. One became a member of the Legislature, and was associated with the ieception of the Prince and Princess of Wales when they visited the colony. 1 was much pleased and gratified to read in one of the New Zealand papers that on one public occasion when making a speech, he frankly and bravely referred to the fu't that he had worked his way up from a very humble origin. That showed the true gallant British spirit, and did him the greatest. credit."
" I suppose you tarke an interest in New Zealand, as so many of your boys are out there ?"
"I do indeed," replied the doctor. " And I am delighted to read that Mr Seddon is making that move in the direction of establishing; retail shops for the sale of New Zealand meat. 1 am sure that i^ a move in the right direction. I have long felt convinced that some step of the kind was absolutely necessary if New Zealand meat was to receive full justice and be treated on its real merits. So I hope the plan will be promptly carried out and energetically prosecuted."
