The Proposed Memorial to Sir Hector Macdonald
_ + Regarding the Hector Macdonald memorial, to which part of the proceeds of Mr Alaster K. MacKenzie's lecture this evening will be devoted, Mr Sheriff Guthrie, of Ross, Cromarty, and Sutherland, writes to the press :— " A strong feeling has been expressed throughout the country in favour of a memorial to the late General Sir Hector Macdonald. which shall be for the benefit of those who bear his name and arc his representatives. At the^tinie of his death. Sir Hector's son. a manly-looking" boy of fifteen, whose picture Sir Hector always had with him, was at Dnlvvich College, where he was placed by his father, and it is o.bvi'JiK.'y of the utmost importance that thus arrangement should continue. !No %-uc, knowing his love Jor his only.* hid, can see the lad. so like Ms father, without feeling that whatever else may be done, the first luty t.f fc'-ir Hector's countrymen, his oomntne..., and his friends is. to the living Hector and to his widowed luotii^v.The fund will be invested in the na'nvs of Sir Hector Munro. of Foulis, I'.aMm•t. Lord-Lieutenant of Rosstmv, the very Rev. Br Cameron Lies, Ed'n>urgh, and myself, as trustees, to be used at our discretion for Hector Macdonald's education and start iv iii'e. In the first instance the fund ivill be needed and will be devoced to Hector's continuance at his present school. Any ultimate free ImUnce ivill be applied in association with Sir Hector Macdonald's name lor such object in connection vvitn the \rmy or the Highlanders as the .rustees may select. I shall l?e glad o receive subscriptions u\d to ainver enquiries.
