Something in the nature of a langlt of wires occurred on the Invercurgill Dunedin telegraph line late last night and delayed work considerably Eventu ally the use of the Huilway Depart meat's service was ' secured, and thi messages were got through. The cause of the lapse was not known. The last time it was the burning of the Clintou station that brought the wires to earth, but this latest break was not so complete. The Ilorough Council met last night in committee to consider the finances of tho town. It is understood that the Finance Committee have made certain proposals for increasing th.} revenue, and there will probably be a discussion at the meeting of the Council next Thursday. Out of respect for the late Mr 11. Double, the hairdressers of Invercargill have decided to close their places of business from 1 to 1 o'clock this afternoon. Headers are ro'.ninded that Mr AiasU-r R. MacKenzie. late of the Gordon Highlanders, delivers his descriptive lecture on the Afghan War, Lord Roberts's march to Kandahar and the Battle of Majuba HUI. where MacKen/.ie, along with the late Sir Hector Macdonald and others, wus captured by the Boers This ■is certain to bo a most instructive discourse, as Mr- MacKen/.ie has several charts showing the various positions, and localities .in connection with these historic fights. Sergeant-Major Kennedy, late of tho 72nd CSeuforth) Highlanders. called on us to say ' that he hud fought with Mr Mac- , Kcnzie in the Afghan campaign, and it had given him great pleasure to again ' meet his o.d comrade in arms. Tay street, a irumbcr of • oil paintings, chiefly portraits. Obvio usly the paintings .are taken from pho--1 tographs, but tho method by which so t, exquisite a result lis obtained is a sec- -. ret iv the possession of the artist, Mr.-* > T .1 Hell, (Jrepuki. After a considerj able time spent in experiment Mrs Hell has elfected an improvement in crystol- .. cum work that enables her to turn out I the highly artistic pictures now on ex--1 hibitiou in Mr Devve's warehouse. It ■i will be admitted by all who examine these portraits, some of which are taken I from ordinary magazine illustrations, 1 that Mrs Hell's improvement is r»al. Q The work lis genuine art, chaste and imss Ished, and capable of bearing the closest scrutiny Tho colour, moreover, is lam- , ing. It will not fade with age. Mrs Hell has sent samples of her work to 1 Sydney, wK->re it was at once recognised that a discovery of some importance had been made, and Mis' Hell is . now receiving regular commissions from l one of tho principal studios in the New South Wales capital. It will, perhaps, b« news to some to hear that artistic " work that cannot be done in Sydney is bwing done in Orepuki. But it is perfectly true, and those who inspect tho ' pictures on view in Mr Devve's shop will 1 quite understand how it is that Mrs ] Bell has been able to draw orders from Sydney. The picture can bo taken from J any photograph (portrait or landscape ' or interior), and it is probable- that Mrs 5 Bell will find locally a considerable field for the employment of- her skill and talent.
