The usual reports from the inspectors, architect, technical instructor. trunnt
officer, and, gyiiinastic instructor were read and received .
The technical instructor reported that the teachers' classes in Invercuryill for woodwork and cookery were well attended, and the pupila were preparing foi examinations in June undor the City Guild of Dondon Institute. Mr Gaz/nrd. assistant teacher of woodwork, had been appointed to the Gore Classes, ami Mr H. Drownlie wag recommended for tho position. It was also recommended that llr W. 11. Clark be appointed to supervise the woodwork drawing. "Mrs Turner, teacher of cookery, had also been required at Core, and Miss Dryburgh was recommended as a suitable substitute. (Messrs H. E. Shacklock had most generously donated two ranges for the technical school at Invercai'gill and Gore, the combined value being i.'?' 1 This also carried a subsidy of £ for £ from 'the Department. — Tho appointment a as recommended were made, Tho Chairman moved, and Mr Raymond seconded, a special vote of thanks to Messrs Shacklock for their handsome present, which showed in a most substantial manner their genuine interest in technical education.
Mr K. Allen, secretary of the Executive of the Farmers' Union, forwarded a copy of resolution passed by his executive, desiring to work in conjunction with the High Schools and Education Board for the establishment of classes for agricultural science. — Mr Macalistei" briefly explained the action of tho High School Board in the matter, and suggested that this Board, which had an interest in Vhe movement, should appoint a sub-couuuittea to meet the other delegates. The Board's teachers tvould undoubtedly take advantago of tho lectures, and it would give them an opportunity of getting a (thorough training in agricultural science.— Mr Raymond said that he had read with some interest the report of the Farmers' Executive discussion 'on the matter, and he thought the proposal a step in the right direction. He moved i}iat Mr* Cowie and the mover be appointed to meet the other delegates. — This was seconded by Mr Scandrett and carried.
The Department notified that the sewing classes recently instituted had been recognised by the Department.
The New ZefaJanfl Educational Institute iorwarded a number of leaflets on teachers' superannuation, with a request that they bo circulated among the Southland teachers. — Request complied with.
An application for the establishment of a cadet corps in connection with the Luinsden school was approved-
The inspector reported on on application for the establishment of a school at Waicola, and recommended that the Board view the petitioners claim favourably. 'He also reconumended fl) that if the settlers provide a suitable building at once the Board should provide a teacher : and (2) that the Department be asked to erect a permanent school on the strength of the fact that Waicola is a new settlement,, having been nothing but tussock a few years ago. Mr Coster was offering a new site, and the settlors wtere very willing to do anything in the way of providing material. There were in the district 14 settlors, representing 42 children of school age, 12 under, and most were four miles distant from the nearest school. —Mr Raymond, in moving that the recommendo- ; 4iori be given effect to and a copy of the report sent to the petitioners, said that ho had recently been through the district and was satisfied that, with the recent addition to -the population of the district a school was required. — Mr Scandrett seconded the motion, which was carried.
Mr H. G. Brass, Bentmore, wrote that Miss Carmichuei had asked to be relieved from her engagement in one month, and asked that steps be taken to fill the vacancy.— The chairman to arrange to fill the vacancy.
The inspectors submitted a fcchedule of new regulations proposed in order to bring the methods of training pupil teachers into line with those in vogue hi other districts. — The matter was referred to the executive for consideration, as several additions of importance were

The Executive Committee reported that the following appointments had been made f— lnvercargill Middle, George Cockroft, second assistant ; Chatton, Jessie Carmichad temporary h.t. for twelve months ; Burwood station (near Mararoa), Minnie Henderson, household school ; Mataura, Annie Frydo, temporary p.t. ; Fortrose, Sarah Murdoch, temporary mistress for twelve months. That the following tenders had been accepted :— New school, Mo to Riniu, iW. Sims, £219 ; same, Morton Mains, T. Strang, £232 ; addition to Heddon Bush school, E- Cufl, £68 : erection of shelter shods, BlufT, J. Walker and Sons, £91 (on condition that "the committee contribute hnlf coat).

On the inspectors' reports, the oxecutive reoom mended that the attention of several eomi'mittees be drawn to matters mentioned therein.
