The seven-year-old son of Harry Bennett was run' over yesterday near Aliku by a dray loaded with metal, and died during the afternoon. News has been received of the death. in Landon, of Mr N. W. Levin, founder of the firm of that name in this city, aged 84. Charles Pyne. described as an tlcctiiial engineer, Was charged with smuggling by bringing a parcel containing two pieces of lace and a pair of boots ashore from a tteamer without paying duty, and was fined £3.

The mails via 'Frisco, which left Auckland on March 2"th, did not reach London till Wednesday, four days late. At the annual meeting of the N.Z. Rugby Union, a resolution that the larger unions should assist country unions by allowing them a reasonable percentage of gate receipts travelling expenses was negatived. The ■ secretary stated that no definite arrangements had been made for financing the team which it i»- proposed to send to England owing to the absence pi definite information with regard to probable gate receipts.

The Manawatu Times states that the position of Dairy Comiraissioner has been offered to Mr D. McGowan, one of the Government's instructors, and that he will probably accept the position. It also states that 15,000 carcases of mutton, bearing the Government stamp and shipped from Auckland to London by the Matatua, were described on the Smithfield m;ark«t as emaciated and a disgrace to the colony-

In Chi'istchurch 37 cases of scarlatina were reported up to April 15th, and 36 in" the remainder of the month. In the rest of the Canterbury district 43 cases were recorded up to April 15th, ami 29 for the rest of the month. in March 134 cases were reported in Christchurch and 106 in the rest of the district.
