«. The election of Mayor and Cou.icii, lnvercurgill. yestoitlay created more than usuul interest, due to a variety of causes. In the tirst named contest t'uo aspirants were two well known gentlemen, botii of whom had been identified with Council work for a numoer of years, and lnul each held the position of chief magistrate of Invercargill. The issue of the contest n«s regarded as doulilful, us Mr I'roggatt had admittedly v strong cluiin 'by virtue of i""tf «.'''- vice, while AJr Longuet had .proved himself a capable mayor. The polling shows that the contest was an exceedingly close one, Mr Froggalt securing tho honours by the narrow margin of 20 \oirs. in the main polling houih Mr Lcingupt had a slight lend, but ut the suliurbuu places ilr Froggatt more than retrieved himself, especially at the South end. The result of the IK>ll wus declared about H-Hii. the delay being due to the procedure at the Weslcyan silioolrooiii, where the clerks counted both mayoral and couiKil ]>apers before forwarding them to the main polling place. The re.sutt was awaited by about 300 people, and there was a goo-J deal of cheering when the announcement was made. renewed when the successful cundidute mounted the steps to return thanks. Mr Froggatt snid : Mr Returni>ig Oflicor, ladies and gentlemen — I have to thank you most heartily for the position you ha\e placed mo in to-day, and 1 trust thut the year which lies before us will be one of success and prosperity to the town, and that you will not regret the net ion you have taken on this occasion. As 1 stated nt the nomination, the little matter that occurred is now buried in oblivion, oiid my opponent and myself will try to work together for the good of the town, just as mu-:n as we have done in the past. I trust that the resultof the election is one you will never regret. 1 again thank you for the position, and assure you that you will have my services at your disposal in the interests of the town and the electors generally. (Clreers.). Mr Longuet said : Mr Returning Officer, ladies and gentlemen, — I think you will agree with me that there is little for the defeated candidate to say but congratulate his opponent and those who have worked for him. The Mayor-elect seconded the vote, which was carried with another round of cheers. It being announced that the result of the election of Councillors would probably not be announced till 11 p.m.. the crowd dispersed. l<usv, year Mr Longuet was return*;! unopposed. 7n 1901 ho was elected as ngafnst Messrs 11. Hastings ami V. G. Stone, the total number of votes cast being 1301, or 87 more than on the prenent occasion. A few minutes after 11 o'cloc 1 -- the Returning Officer (Mr \V. Young) appeared to wake the announcement regarding the Council election. There wore about 50 persons in attendance, including several ladies. Following is the voting. Mr I'etrie thanked those who had supported him, mid a voto of thanks to the Returning officer concluded the proceeding* J The Returning Officer was highly complimented on the manner in which he ami his start performed their duties. Th c polling was steady at the main booth, and all were Kept busy till closing time. The counting of tho Council votes w u s nn arduous task, but it was completed in reasonable tim«. The result of th e elections is that all the retiring councillors who offered themselves were elected, the new blood being supplied by Messrs 1). Koche (an old Councillor). S. McDonald and R. B. McKay.
