NO COMPULSOKY CONCILIATION

LONDON, April 28
In the House of Commons, Mr Asquith's motion. " That the Governmt'iit's inaction in regard to the men at Hethesda, ex-employes at Lord renrhyn's slate quarries, where trouble has so long existed, was reprehensible, and that it was the imperative duty of the Government to promptly intervene to secure a just and effectual .settlement." was defeated by HIG to 182 votes.
Mr Gerald Bullour said the Board of Trade had no compulsory powers of intervention, and it was impossible for the Board to move to any useful purpose.

Mr Arthur Balfour said the Conciliation Act would be deprived of its real value if it was compulsory. He considered Lord Peifrhyn was right .in resisting the men's claim for controlling power and management through the quarry committee.
