At tho Gore Autumn Stakes (inanimate matches) yesterday, the championship of Southland was won by '* Dunedin," the Ladies' Bracelet by Dunlop, and the Autumn Stakes by E. P. Graham. The full particulars will appear in a Inter issue. The Southland Rowing Association announced, that their first championship regatta is to be held on Wednesday next at Ocean Beach. Bluff. They have arranged for a special train to leave Bluff for town about ti p.m. and a later train about 7.30 for the convenience of excursionists and competitors. Messrs Greenland and Son, the -.veil. known Melbourne boat-builders, have generously donated a challenge shield to the association to be rowed for by senior pairs. This regatta is something of an experiment and no doubt the various clubs will endeavour to support the Association in tho venture. Messrs Joosteu and Metzger (Blufl), and King and Barnsdalc (Ocean Beach) aro working the local arrangements a& to course, etc.

Mr Lionel Broad, whoso enthusiasm, in athletics is well known, has sent to tho secretary of the Axemen's Carnival the following letter :— " I am offering you a silver cup, vulue £3 3s, for a race at your Carnival, under the following conditions': IOO" yards flat scratch raco, open to all schools in Southland, for boys under 15 years of age." Tho race should prove a very interesting one. and Mr Broad is to he commended for his generous encouragement to youths in athletics.

At tte monthly meeting of the Horticultural Society tho secretary reported that the door-takings at the Autumn Show were considerably above the average.
