The Wakatipu Licensing Election.
I . Tof the Editor. ; Sir,— The election . ol i members for the V [various licerisiug benches is now^fllUng;_v the air, and is the theme of conyersa-, ticn. Your paper circulates so largely I in the southern end' of the electorate of Wakatipu /that possibly the electors there may" desire to know something of the candidates in the northern en*d. At Pembroke, Lake Wanuka,.' there ara Messrs Richard Norman and Win. M6u"teith. The first is the oldest resident t ; in tho district, and was in wie _ hotel; ; ' line for a number of years,' but is now in the farming line. Four attempts wore "^ made to close the , hotel he then . re'prev senfed, but on Mr Norman appearing before the licensing boncfies "the attempts jwere frustrated. Mr VTni. Monteith has ;. been a storekeeper in the^ district for a ' period of about 18 years. Mr Jas, Scott, of Cromwell, also stands. He is a. resident of over 30 years standing, and was mayor and councillor, an<l a member of a previous -licensing bench.. Mr Arthur Ford, of Gleuorchy, is a miner, and wa^ in the hotels lino in, Quecris- ; tawn for a short period, and was- -jfyfor- ■'; iner member of the benc^y, J)r Dcmgias is a proininent^ Vfakatipu .citizen 'since ■: the early days. All of \ tliose jncCy lia' safely puV flown to vote "for contihuanco<and justice, but X ta\ ; 6 not" tlie- slightest (lc-ul>t that in the unlikely event of a deK being discovered, they will not hesitate to weed it out. Mr P. de la I'erreUo, the editor and proprietor of the Lake County Press, was bony in tho district, but unliko all the. others this is . £is flrs.tn public appearani'e. Ido - not. know KiS. platform, but 1 kuow ho is a steady, industrious young man: I din , «»*?- - quainted with the two. other c'andiolateS,.' Messrs .T.. F. Johnston, of Luuisden, aiicl Mr W. Miller, of AYaikaia,..but your readers will Unow them. This, election 'is n, very momentous one, and ever y. Voter should do his and her duty, 1 and repair - to the booths without : "faii. The^interests involved are Mwy great, and it. Is a subject for congratulation that the electors hav'p a good choice. If^it^ehpuld happon that' there is a " prohibition constable in a district, then it is advisablo that level-headed liieii should sit on -the bench, for prohibition gentlemen -in office • are likely to tho uwrk somei times. 1 believe I' anv right rin saying . that the licensed houses in this , elector-- ; ate are well conducted, so that there -is,, no likelihood of any harshness. I enclose my card, and Reference .which/ you. ; A can show to visitors.—- 1 am/.&c., . ; : :'- --•■, ELECTDIV ;
