HOW TO GO.^ ; ' '■■ The people of " Invcrcargill arc generally found loudly bewailing and dairying the uupieturesqueness oftW place tijey live in— its flatness, - i;h« ' 4ack of beauty in its surroundings,-* * the absence of places in which ib M spend a few happy hours or a few . days of rest and refreshment^ amid V pleasant scenes and sweet odours. We arc jiot among- these people, and think the chief fault lies with themselves. They are .badly informed in this respect, and have but "a small acquaintance with the outlying por- \ tions of this end of New Zealand. Perhaps they have never driven along some of our peaceful country roads, .' with the bush on either hand, when.the gorse and the manuka is in, a blaze of colour ; they may not have paddled quietly \ip some p£ our little streams and picniced in, the shady dells; they may not have cycled to Otatara or Awariia^Bay or Riverton Beach; they may 2dt know where the Back Beach is ; it '.'ls., possible even that they have not 'crossed 'the* dreaded Foveaux Straits and spent a few days amid the beauties of Stewart Island, which is known - and. , raved over in the drawing rooms of ' Britain and the Continent. ,But the chief fault with these discontented j people is not so much that they have not heard of places to- go to, but that do not know how to go.
