Band S orts.

The sports organised in aid of the contest fund of the Southland Battalion Bind wore held in the Queen's Paik yesterday evening, aDd were largely attended. The weather was perfect, and everything passed off very pleaeantly, though the sports were not what one would call classic. The Old Timer*.' Band played their way to tho Park, and contributed a number of selections in a very creditable manner. The Bluff Band also attended and gave valuable assistance, a compliment which the Battalion Band should not be slow tc return when opportunity offers. The Pipe Band mustered eght members, whn played a few appreciated marches and selections. Pi^er Jamieson danced the Highland Fling, Mr Murtagh an Irish jig, and Mr Sutherland a sailors' hornpipe, each recei vingahearty round of applause. The bicycle races were well contested, the finishes being fairly close and the riding keen. The motor race was one of the ruoßt interesting items of the sports, the three rider 9, Messrs R. and W. Murie and Mr Edwards putting up some rattling laps. Ihe contest fund should have received an appreciable, addition by the receipts, and if the band does as well as is hoped there should bo no financial loss on their undertaking.
