The last ..mil brings the gratifying information that a local invention. Gladstone's patent hair pin has been successfully manufactured in London. Wo have seen voluminous correspondence, account sales, and statements in connection with the matter, and find 'hat for the first 11 days alter the manufacture of the pins, manufacturers' sales amounted t.o £299 13s. Since then ihe shipping trade have completed orders for the colonies, and a big line for Messrs Uoss and Glendinin K is now aboard tho s.s. Wafwcrn, duo this week. The pins should bo on the local market in about fourteen days. This is the o-ily local order which the manufacturers Juiva, so far, been able to fill on account of tho Home denvantf, but the requirements should soon bo overtaken and tho supply maintained. A sample box shows that tho pins are handsomely put up in assorted sizes, and they should command a ready sale, as they appear to be all that is claimed for them. The account sales to hand show that a substantial dividend will be payable to the shareholders immediately, and others are expected t ( o follow in quick succession, The ultimate prosperity of tho pin seems assured, and the inventor and those associated with him arc to be congratulated upon the success achieved.

Sitting in Wellington yesterday. Judge Edwards gave his decision on law points in the case G. W. Hanks v. Bank of New Zealand, a claim of £1000 damages for dishonouring a cheque. Plaintiff instructed a clerk to pay £137 to his account. Tho clork 1 made out the pay-in slip in a wrong name, but tho accountant of the Bank gave a, receipt as though the money had been paid to plaintiff's account. The money was not put to his. account,, and, vhon a cheque was presented, it was dishonoured. His Honour held that, on the law points, the neglect was on tho part of plaintiff's clerk, and not on the part of the Bank, which was not compelled to show that the recoipt corresponded with the pay-in slip. At tho Christchurch Magistrate's Court oh Tuesday Henry Havelock Hau* na was fined 20a for signing: a claim for enrolment while under 21 years of age. Mrs M.
