The steamer Monowai left Melbourne at 2.30 p.m on the 28th January, and arrived at Hobart at 2.3(4 a.m on t>he 30th, sailing thence at noon, and arriving at Bluff at 11 a.m yesterday. She experienced light variable winds and fine weather throughout the passage. The Monowai had a very large passenger list, an especially large number of steerage passengers travelling. The steamer Moeraki arrived from Dunedin atsa.m yesterday, and sailed for Melbourne via Hobart at 5 p.m. The s.B Janet Nicoll and Pareora arrived from Greymouth yesterday, both having left that port about 10 p.m on Friday, and had to face half a gale to Cascade Point. The Janet Nicoll lands part cargo of coal, and proceeds to Dunedin. The Pareora lands all ber cargo for the Railway Department, and returns to Greymouth. The steamer Monowai was to sail for .Dunedin at daybreak this morning. The contracts recently entered into with -Vickera, Sons, and iWaxim Limited, of Barrow-in-Funiess. and C. S. Swan and Hunter Limited, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, were for the building of two large and fast steamers for the Cunard Steamship Pom ' pany. The steamera ,will cost £1,250,000 each. The cablegram conveying the information to N.Z. increased tbe number of vessels, and made their individual value a quarter of a million only. The Union S.S. Co. was recently haled before the Wellington court and charged with having sent the Haupiri to sea without a. full crew. It was contended that the vessel should carry three firemen, whereas she only carried two. For the defence it was stated tbat the steamer only required two firemen while engaged on the PictonWellington ferry Bervice, but as a matter of faot, she carried three, the third, however, bemg signed on as donkeyman, though ho was an experienced fireman. The Magistrate said he did not wi-h to lay down a definite precedent, but when, as here, a donkeyman was a superior fireman, and the vessel carried a donkeyman, she really carried three firemen. He therefore dismissed the case. —- - -~, (By Teisoraph.) Gisbobne, Feb. 2. At an inquiry into the stranding of the barque Gladys the evidence of the captain and mate was taken, also that of the sailmaker, who was at tbe wheel at the time of the occurrence.
