The members of the Southland Count)’ Council met in the Albion Hotel on Wednesday evening to take an official farewell of Mr Lachlan Fraser, who represented the Wallacetown riding in the Council for nine years and did not seek re-election after the expiry of his last term. Councillor Robertson occupied the chair, and in regretting Mr Fraser’s retirement made special reference to the grip he had of the county finances. It was a pity that all the councillors were not so far-seeing and shrewd. Mr Fraser retired with honour and all wished him long life and prosperity. Councillor Green said that the council could ill e fibril to lose a man like Mr Erase - , and Councillor Hamilton regretted the severance of personal friendship. Councillors McCallum and Stewart leferred to Mr Fraser as a master of finance and Councillor Fleming said he had known Mr Fraser as a business man since he was a boy. He was recognised as one of tho shrewdest and keenest business men who had ever come into Invercargill When the ‘health of the guest of the evening had been drunk with enthusiasm, Mr Fraser replied, thanking the councillors for their kind and appreciative words, and saying that he was getting up in years and would like to retire into privat
