The Gore A. and P. Show.

SECOND DAY. The second day of the Gore show was held on Friday, when the weather was a slight improvement on that of the first day, only a few intermittent showers falling, but the ground under foot was very sloppy and wet. All the little hollows and furrows held water, and when it is stated that the engines on the ground were able to draw sufficient water for their boilers from the pools about, some idea of the liquid state of the show ground may be imagined. Notwithstanding the day and the ground it is estimated that close upon 5000 persons were present—over £l7O was taken at the gates, and this year the members’, officials’, and exhibitors tickets issued were far in excess of any previous year. The fair sex were largely represented, and the Gore show of LiOl will be well remembered by them by the mud they have had to clean off their skirts if not by more serious consequences. The show itself was one of the best that the Society has over held as far as the quality of the stock exhibited is concerned, and good judges place a few of the classes ahead of similar classes at this year’s Dunedin show. The management in tho hands of that very capable secretary—Mr Latham —left nothing to be desired, and again the thanks of the press representatives are due to him for the information supplied. Commencing with the draught section, the opening class—entire, any age was a particularly good one, and in tho winner, the imported horse Sandy Erskine, Mr Grierson has a magnificent representative. With'the exception of at the Dunedin horse parade, when his imported stable mate— Agitator downed him, bandy Erskine has never been beaten in this or the Old Country. lie was also awarded the champion card for draught stallions. Herdsman who showed too much white about him for many judges scored in the three year old class. Mr W. Waddell’s entry in tho two year old class was full of quality and had a good field, and the same remark ought, to apply to the yearling class, with the addition that Mr Bellew’s entry (and the class) was tho best of its kind ever seen in Southland. The brood mare class was not up tho usual standard, but in the 151 hands oi under class a real clinker ivas awarded the coveted ticket in a small class.full of quality mares. Mr Dickie scored his thiid consecutive win with a grand pair of mares in the pair brood mares class. In dry mares, Messrs Reid and Fleming’s Dunedin champion grey mare was again placed on top, and it is questionable if tho superior of the entry has even been seen in Gore. Her meeting with Blakie’s champion this week is looked forward to with interest by breeders. In pair dry mares class the eight forward were all grand mares, and Keid and Fleming scored again. Reid and Fleming were again sue cessful with a really nice filly in the three year old filly class, and John Waddell won in a strong class with a g>od useful sort of filly. In yearlings T Fleming scored a meritorious win with a nic > filly showing every promise of being a g’od one when fud grown. The pair fillies clas was keenly contested by the Wadde 1 Bros., W. beating J. after considorab'e trouble to the judge. The gelding classy were not so good as the other classes in this section, and the entries not so numerous r.s is generally the case. In the sire and two progeny, and mare and two progeny, C. Cooper gained two firsts, with no opposition. In spring-dray horses Mr J. Fowler s entry was full of quality, and had a strong class. W. Waddell’s four horse team had' two others in that class, and also the mo..t suitable reaper and binder team, and was a splendid exhibit. H. S. Jones with a nice mare, accounted for the three guinea special for best draught blood mare on the ground. The thoroughbred classes were poorly fillrd, and, with the exception of Black and Red in tho stallion class, the quality was also wanting. In this class at Wyndham Trimolilo was placed in front of Mr Nicol’s horse., but here tho judges justly reversed the position-. Vanderbilt, a fine upstanding chestnut, beatthree others in the carriage stallion class, including Monte Carlo, who was placed fi.st in the hackney class. In the mare class the two entries forward lacked quality. Weightcarrying hacks up to 14 stone was a splendid class, and the judges were tried in miking thejiwards. The winner, a particularly nice quality horse of J. Young’s, had all the advantage of being well handled—no mean advantage in the ring — otherwise Mr Mitchel’s exhibit would have been closer than second to him. The other two placed horses, Gerkin’s and Mrs Glen’s were good stamps—the latter perhaps a shade too light for the class. In 11-stone hacks, a particularly strong class was presented, and fully a dozen of them were fit for a metropolitan show ring. Dalgliesh’s entry, whicli was also placed first at Balchitha, had his work cut out to down Jenkins’ horse which, if anything, showed more breeding. The cobs were a good class, and the ladies’ hat ks also good ones. In this latter class a very nice looking but bad-mannered Vanguard horse was placed in front of a perfectly mannered horse in Irish King, and suiely the judges made another mistake in awarding the prize for best lady rider. In 14-hand and under ponies, tho Gentleman scored another win for his new’ owner, the competition this time being weak ; this win throwing him out of the harness class. ’lhree nice buggy pairs came out in this class, and chiefly owing to the past master in charge of the reins Mr Inder’s pair were placed first. In single buggv horses J. A Mitchell was first, with J. Jenkirs second with two good ones. S. Inder again scored in the dog cart class, with a good useful sort; J. Galt being second with a nice class of horse ; Irish King gaining another h.e. ticket. Blackley had a lucky win in the harness pony class (under 14) hands) i.n the grounds already mentioned, and O’Comior’s pretty little mare repeated her annual pirformanee in the 13) hands’ class. The hunting and high jumning class were well contested; but the sloppy state of the ground somewhat spoiled tho exhibition. The chief surprise was the downfall of the Oamaru and Dunedin winner of the high jumping contest, who seemed to be badly handled. The management would improve the jumping if they were to erect better and stronger fences than hurdles for the hunters’ jumping contests, and would also minimise the danger. Several spills occurred in this contest on Friday, but none of them were more serious to the victims than a good ducking. A word of praise is due to the railway management at Gore for the promptness in the despatch of the trains after the show, and the facilitites afforded to exhibitors for entraining their stock.
