INVERCARGILL POLL. The result of the recount, which was completed shortly after 4 o’clock on Saturday morning, is as follows : — Continuance ... ... 2043 Reduction ... ... 2855 No License ... ... 3079 Total voters ... ... 5243 This shows an increase for continuance of 3, for reduction of 10, and for No License 7, and in the total of voters 9, and four less informal. No License is lost by 9 l-sth votes, and reduction is carried by 234 J votes. The total number of informal votes was 96. We aro informed t hat of the informal votes fully 40 perrons struck out tho topline “Third Schedule,” or tho top line line of the “ Directions for voting.” Owing to irro ulariiiesin computation by several of tho deputy-returning officers, tho Magistrate, Mr S. E McCarthy, ordered Mr J. S. Baxter’s deposit of £2O to be returned, the cost of the recount to be paid by the Returning Officer and charged to the Consolidated Fund. [Per United Press Association.] Wellington, Dec. 7. The recount of tho Newtown local option poll concluded last night, and tho result is that prohibition is declared carried by four votes. Ashburton, Dec. 6. A recount of the local opt'on poll took place to-day, and prohibition was carried by 95 instead of 101, as at the first declaration, The figures are : Voters, 4625 ; continuance, 1734 ; reduction, 2489 ; no-license, 2870 ; informal 125. It is understood that proceedings will be commenced early next week by the licensed victuallers with the object of getting the poll declared void. Westport, Dec. 6.

At the adjourned annual meeting of the Buller Licensing Committee a new license was granted to Charles Alliugton for an hotel at Millerton. Tho Magistrate was not present and Mr Cottrell, counsel for objectors raised the question as to the effect of tho last local option poll which has been taken since the adjournment, the poll being in favour of continuance and quoting the pending case Westlake v. IVaipawa Licensing Committee. The Committee over ruled the objection and granted the licence, which however has to be s gnod by the Magistrate before it can be issued.
