Winton.

(FROM dUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The Winton (horal Society’s seventh annual concert was held in Moore’s hall on Friday night,when the usual high character of its performances was amply sustained. The first part of the programme (in which forty took part) was McFarren’s cantata, “ MayDay,” Mr A. L. Wyllie being conductor, Mr R. M. Gilmour leader of the orchestra,. and Mrs Brown pianist. Songs and instrumental items were given by Miss Hishon, the Misses K. and B. Wilson, MeKenzie and Ritchie, Mrs Blue, and Messrs Jefcoato, Tilley, Lillicrap, A. Clark and W. Wilson. A quartette party—Miss Gilmourand Messrs Wyllie, R. M. and J. Gilmour—also materially assisted the entertainment. The Borough Council on Friday empowered tlie Mayor to employ some one to assist the surfaceman with some small works recommended by the Works Committee. The Clerk was instructed to write to a person who had without authority dug a drain through a borough holding, requiring him to pipe and fill in the raid drain. The District Railway Engineer wrote promising to try to visit Winton at next flood that ho might see for himself what need exists for larger openings for the escape <4 flood water through the railway line. A telegram from Sir J. G. Ward promi-es to afford tho Borough Council an ojq.u.ui.ity of deputationising him before fixing li.u site of tho new post office. Thu question of voting was hold over to Wcd> cUay evening. Permission was given to a ratepayer to burn stumps and rubbish on the. usual terms and the Mayor was authorised to make the best terms he could for a temporary occupation at such times as not wanted by the public, of tho cemetery paddock known as tho lower paddock. Accounts amounting to £3l 9s 4d were passed for payment,.

The Deacon’s Court of tho Winton Presbyerian Church had under their consideration on Monday night a report from an architect and plans tor tho enlargement of the church. It was ultimately resolved to submit the plans, involving an estimated outlay of £3OO, to a meeting of the congregation at an early date, with a strong recommendation to take tho matter up with the view of providing the sitting accommodation required.
