The resumption of the teßt match was delayed by rain, which fell during the night and early part of the forenoon. Owing to the sodden condition of the wicket it was 2.55 p.m. before theplayers took the field, the not outs, Lockwood and Rhodes, escaping the 1 usual fate of so many over night partnerships, refused to be separated, and had no difficulty in negotiating the bowling of Noble and Howell. Runs came pretty freely till the total reached 376, when Maclaren declared the innings closed.

Jones took three wickets for 77, Noble one for 111, Trumper two for 35, Armstrong one for 64, Hopkins 0 for 28, Howell one for 58.

Duff and Trumper opened for Australia, Rhodes and Hirst bowling. Disaster came aarly. Duff was easily caught by Jessop, standing atforwaid point when he had made a couple — one for nine. Hill succeeded and made a single, then hit Hirst into the slips, Braund taking a right-handed lightning catch — two for ten. Gregory joined Trumper but failed to score — three for 14. Darling came next but had only made three when he was easily caught at cover point by Jessop — four for 17. For a similar score Noble was finely stumped by Lilley off a breaking ball — five for 25. Trumper was playing carefully, for the bowling was very fine and the ground soft. Armstrong was caught by Lilley at the wickets off his first ball — six for 25. Then Truraper fell a victim to Hirst — seven for 31. Hopkins was taken smartly at the wickets. Kelly was badly missed by Jackson at cover point off Rhodes— eight for 35. Jones skied his first ball to Jackson at cover pomt — nine for 35. Howell was dismissed by a fine catch by Fry at long on in the same over.

Hirst took three wickets for 15, Rhodes 7 for 17, Braund 0 for 1. Play was stopped at 6. 10 owing to poor light and rain. The attendance was good, but smaller than yesterday. May 31. Received 31st, 4.57 p.m. The match was drawn. Heavy rain continued falling throughout last night and this morning the ground was thoroughly soaked. The weather cleared in the afternoon and play was resumed at 5.15. The weather waa then delightful bnt the wicket was still bad. Trumper added to his overnight score but ended his career by giving Braund an easy catch in the slips off Rhodes— 2 for 16. Hill partnered Duff and both batting very steadily, carried the total to 41 when Fry, at square leg, brought off a fine catch at DufFs expense— two for 41. Gregory assisted Hill to play out time and when stumps were drawn at 6.25 the score stood two for 46.

Hirst took no wickets for 10, Rhodes 1 for 9, Braund 1 for 14, Jackson 0 for 7. In consequence of the delay in starting, a crowd, numbering 14,000, clamoured for admission to the ground. Hundreds broke 1 in, and many were trodden down, dozens being badly injured.
