The man who owns the " Encyclopaedia Britannica ," and considers' it simply a work of reference to be appealed to in case of doubt, or when in quest of specific information, doubtless feels that he has his moneys worth even if he paid the publishers' catalogue price, £46, for the work in half morocco binding. It is worth that expenditure to know that he has always at hand the most authoritative information in all departments of human knowlodge, yet if he limits his use of the volumes to reference alone, he is missing by far the greater portion of its value to him. It is a reading library, aa well as a reference library. Upon its pages the greatest minds of the human race have spread their thoughts in the choicest language. Gems of literature ore those monographs on all topics that interest mankind* written by suoh men as Right Hon. James Bryce, Professor Max Muller, Sir.Walter Besant, Dean Farrar, and the eleven hundred other illustrious names that make up the "Sooiety of Gentlemen who produced this great work.
