Huddart, of Melbourne, with the Conspicuous Service Cross awarded her son, late midshipman Huddart, for gallantry at llie battle of (Iraspan, in the early stage of tho war. Meusocrnk, Oct. .31. Major Melvnighl, one of the officers of the Fifth Contingent, has submitted a report to this Covernment in reference to Major-Gen-eral Beatson's treatment of the men. Speaking at a social given iv his honour on his return, Major McKnighl said the Fifth was as good as any other Victorian contingent, but the officers and men were treated like do^s, and lhe losses of ihe corps at Wilmansrust were llie result of gross carelessness. He never heard any British officers use sach strong language as Beatson and his next in command.
