Five hundred Filipinos attacked 46 Americans at Gandari River, killing 10 and wounding 24. Oct. 19. . Received 20fch, 4.52 p.m. The desertions from the Imperial Yeomanry at Shorncliffe are officially denied. The War Office explains that many of the Yeomanry are \a arrears of pay, due to the absence of proofs of identification, but arrangements have been completed to promptly settle their claims. Renter's Agency states that Great Britain and Russia are in complete agreement not to intervene in the event of disturbance in Afghanistan. Received 20th, 5.8 p.m. Sir A. L. Smith, Master of Rolls, has re&igned, Sir Richard Henn Collins, one of the Lords Justices, taking his place, and Mr J. C. Matthews, of the Queen's Bench Division, succeeds Collins. Received 20th, 5 p.m. The Times' St Petersburg correspondent states that the Russian troops within striking distance of Afghanistan do not exceed 8000, with 30 guns. The Czar, M. De Witte, Minister of Finance, and Count Lamsdorff, Foreign Affairs, are anxious to maintain general peace, and the Czar has expressed a wish that subordinates in the vicinity of the Afghan frontier should be impressed with his determination to avoid conflict. Received 20th, 5.8 p.m. The Fillipinos at Gandari were subsequently routed and 100 of them were killed. The Devonport dockyard authorities have been instructed to build a battleship 425 feet in length and of 16,500 tons displacement The Papanui landed 34,920 carcases of mutton in bright hard condition, but smelling objectionably. The mutton is selling at 2§d to 3d. Oct 20. Received 21st, 1.3 a.m. j The new War Office Board will be analagous to the Board of the Admiralty, and will be constituted of Field-Marshall Earl Roberts, the Parliamentary and permanent undersecretaries and the chief military administrative officials.
