The Monowai Overdue.

A cablegram from Hobart, despatched late yesterday evening, states that the U.S. S. Co's steamer Monowai, which left the Bluff last Tuesday, had not arrived there, being übout two days overdue There is as yet no cause for serious apprehension, for the good ship may have been compelled to heave to for a considerable time if the wind and weather experienced was like that which passed over this district. Again, although we are used to expect the goings and comings of the steamers of the company to be as punctual aa those of railway trains, it must not be forgotten that the failure of a pump, the cracking of a cylinder cover, or the breaking of a shaft are, any of them, sufficient to account for all the delay that has yet occurred, and, given plenty of eea room, the veteran Captain Chatfiold may be trusted to skilfully handle his ship till repairs are effected, or, if the damage be ' beyond repair, to keep the sea till picked up. What a ship may come through and live i$ shown by the account published elsewhere, of the battering and breakdown of the City of Lincoln, which wao yet able to steam to port with a portion of her engines. In like manner the Alonowai may have been slowly making her way towards the TasmanJan coast last night and may be reported to-day. The ship has a large passenger list, including Musgrove's Opera Company and other theatrical people. At Bluff there shipped : — Mrs Blaokie, Misaes Dalgleish, Diaek, Atley, Messrs Bastings, Hast, Broderick, and the Jubiloe Singers (8).
