Received 20th, 4.52 p.m. Small bodies of Botha's fgrco have returned to the vicinity bf Inhlazantje Mountain and Tabaukulo and Daunhausers commando, numbering 70, has reached Babanaugo. Maritz and T heron have burned many loyalists' farms in retaliation for the reoent executions, and threaten more cruel reprisals. Private Wra, Matthews, 6th N. Z., has been drowned in the Caledon river. Lieut. E. Grant, 7th N. Z., has resumed duty. There wore 109,418 whites in the concentration tiamps in September, including 54,326 children ; 2411 died during the month, including 1964 children. Oct. 20. Received 21st, 1.3 a.m. Earl Roberts, |at the Mansion House, in response to the toast of ' ' The Imperial Forces" doubted if ever an army was more severely tried than during the last two years. The country was most deeply in- i debtecl for the very material help of the colonials, who exhibited extraordinary intelligencu, perseverance and determination, undergoing groat hardships and privations without a murmur : doing everything cheerfully and in a soldierlike manner.
