LIGHT ON THE FRISCO-BRIS BANE SERVICE PROPOSAL THE LOST ARIADNE : SOME PECULIAR DOCUMENTS ANNEXATION IN THE PACIFIC LONG AND FRUITLESS SITTING OF N.S.W. ASSEMBLY SYDNEY, Oct. 18. Received 18th, 4.41 p.tn. In connection with the remarks of the Queensland Premier re the Frisco mail service, a statement is published here, that in the event of New Zealand deciding to subsidise the Canadian line Queensland will be offered the Oceanic service, as that State will lose the Canadian. It is asserted tbat it is probable that the Federal Government would agree to the substitution if Queensland recommended it. As an inducement for the change it is pointed out that American-English mails are delivered about three days quicker via Brisbane than via New Zealand. Received 19th, 0.4 a.m. Kerry and Freke were remanded to Christchurch incustody. When charged to-day with casting away, in company with others, the yacht \riadne, the accused declared themselves innocent of the charge. Detective Goulder deposed that when he arrested the accused be took possession of Freke's portmanteau. Amongst its contents was a book containing what purported to be a conversation between Freke and Captain Mumford with reference to alleged blackmailing of T. C. Kerry relating to the wreck of the Ariadne. Freke said : " Yes ; that is true and the whole of it is my own handwriting." Afterwards he denied the writing. Amongst Kerry's effects witness found soma letters and a packet marked "Mum ford's papers; don't open till you reach London," also a day book referring to a payment of .£l3l to Captain Mumford in various suras. The warship Pylades has arrived from the Pacific. During her cruise she visited and annexed Ocean Mand, an interesting ceremony terminating with the firing of a royal salute. The Assembly sat continuously from 4 yesterday afternoon till 10.30 tonight discussing the Estimates. There were numerous scenes, members liberally dealing personal abuse and hardly any progress was made. MELBOURNE, Oct. 18. Received 19th, 0.27 a.m. The card for the Caulfield Cup was read to-night. After the card Cretonne hardened. The Federal censure debate has been adjourned till Tuesday. The Opposition refuse to promise to close it on Wednesday.
