In view of such a contingency as being wiped out soon the Board intends entering upon a uomprehonsue schedule of works. The member for the district has been asked to oppose the measure. A meeting of the reception committee was held on Tuesday night, Mr James Walker presiding in the absence of Mr Fyfe, chairman. thanks to the secretary, Mr J. A. Greer wid that he understood Mr Ore«r wag about to leave- the district to take up ft position under Messrs Arthur Briacoo end Co in Invercargill; therefore this was a fitting occasion to wish him j;ood luck in his new sphere of action. Mr 'jreer had been a resident for a number of years, and had proved himself a good citizen, always ready and willing to ta^ an active part in any movement foi- the ben<i6tjof the district, and he regretted then- had not been Buffioient time to allow of n more formal lea re-taking, and possibly the L> :sti-wal upon him of aome tokon of their ippreciation of his good services. Messn- Walker, Fraser, Carrie, Millar, and Paull followed in similar strain, and all wished Mr (Jreer every prosperity. Mr Paull aaid that no one regretted Mr Greer's uej-arture more than himself. He had heen his gtortman for upwards of six years, and a bettor servant he never hfld or could wish tD hava. There had not been an unpleasant word between them during the whole timi, and he was sure if Mr Greet proved as solicitous for the interests of the timi whose rmploy ho was about to enter ai he had bee a for his, he could not fail to improve hia o\ra position as well. Mr E. G, Macpherscn, on behalf of the Murihiku Rities, of vhich Mr Greer was secretary, spnkp very highly of his efficiency in that capacity, and n-gretted the corps had not had an opoortuniy to take formal leave of thiiir cornea le. Mr Greer replied in very suitable terms, endorsing the remarks of his late employer, Mr Paull, anent the cordial relations that had existed between them, but disclaimed any other merits beyond what should characterise every good citizen. 7th August.
