Wellington's Anniversary
[By Telegraph.] [Wellington, Jan. 22. The anniversary of Wellington province was being celebrated to-day, by the observance of a general holiday. The principal event was the Port Nicholson Yacht Club’s regatta. The wind was north-west. It varied slightly in power, but was never more than moderately strong. Much interest was taken in the meeting of the Auckland yacht Rainbow and the yacht Waitangi which were tho only, competitors in the race for first-class yachts. The Rainbow sailed the course of twenty-seven knots in 16 min 21 sec less time than the Waitangi, and, including her time allowance of 9 min 50 sec, won by 26 min 11 sec. The first race for second-class yachts was won by the Atalanta and the second by the Mahina. In the first race for half-raters Ruru was winner and Maroro won the second. At the Swimming Club’s sports the provincial championship (100 yards) was won by E. Hegglin, of Blenheim, and the ladies bracelet and anniversary handicap by Duilio, of Foxton.
